Maria Vasquez is a 93-year-old woman who decided to venture out for a rare outing. She stopped at the bank to get some money and then went to the store to purchase shoes. The security cameras show what happened next. Inside of the department store, a man with long hair came up behind her and reached into her shirt. He grabbed $600 in Social Security money out of her bra, where she had tucked it for safekeeping.
Maria needed that money, not only to pay for the shoes but to pay her monthly bills and for food. By the time she realized what happened, the thief had disappeared.
Word spread quickly and the anonymous robber (who did not stay anonymous for long) became one of the most hated people in the area.
Maria Vasquez is 93 years old and she went out on a rare outing to get some shoes. She first stopped at the bank to get money for the month.
She stopped at a nearby department store with her caretaker to buy the shoes. It was then that a man came up from behind her.
He grabbed $600 of cash out of her bra and even scratched her chest in the process. The robbery was quick but it was caught on the security camera at the store.
When Maria realized the man stole the money from her, she started screaming but it was too late. The thief had already left the store.
The footage released by the department store allowed the police to track this man down at his home. He was charged with two counts of robbery, one count of grand larceny and one count of criminal possession of stolen property.
After this went public, the city not only hated the thief, they flooded Maria with support and kindness.
The department store handed Maria $600 in cash to make up for what she had lost and even gave her a pair of shoes.
Over $1000 in donations also came in from elsewhere. A stranger even set up a fund raiser to raise an additional $2000 for Maria.
Maria was overwhelmed by the show of support from others.
