Many of us have experienced the pain of losing a dog. For some, it may be losing the dog when they pass away and for others, it could be when the dog runs away or disappears for some reason or another. A 29-year-old millionaire in China experienced such a difficulty when his beloved dog disappeared a number of years ago. Wang Yan then decided to dedicate his life to saving dogs and has spent millions to rescue more than 2000 stray dogs, including some from a slaughterhouse.
According to the People’s Daily Online, Wang built an animal center in Changchun city, northeast China’s Jinlin province, which is where he purchased the slaughterhouse. The money that he spent on the slaughterhouse was originally earned in the Chinese steel industry when it experienced a boom approximately 14 years ago. Practically all of his earnings have been spent on the animal center, including medically treating dogs and providing dog food.
Wang talked to reporters and said that his dog went missing, which started everything:
“I went looking everywhere, but all to no avail, Finally, someone let me go into the slaughterhouse to try my luck there.”
Wang hung out at the slaughterhouse for a week but couldn’t find his dog.
What he did find were a lot of horrible scenes from inside of the slaughterhouse that he couldn’t get out of his mind. He was sad about what was happening to the dogs who were being butchered for meat so he set up an animal rescue center.
After opening the center, he spent much of his fortune to help the dogs. He does accept donations, but only for food and supplies.
More than 200 dogs live at the center but there were over 1000 living there at one point. Many of those dogs have been adopted.
The Chinese dog meat industry is a big business and they will often target strays in smaller cities.
Every year, some 10,000 dogs, including those that are stolen are slaughtered for meat and sold at market, including in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It marks the Yulin Dog Meat Festival during the summer solstice.
