We often look at various studies and marvel at the information that they bring to light. Then again, there are some studies that are so obvious we feel we could’ve saved them the time and money, because we already the answer. That is likely to be what you feel when you hear about this research.
The research took place at Cornell University, the University of Minnesota and Minnesota population center. As a result of the study, they determined that mothers are less happy than fathers when it comes to parenting duties. It turns out that doing everything causes a lot more stress than doing nothing.
“Researchers have used time diary data to find that mothers are less happy than fathers with their parenting duties,” the study says. “Mothers report more stress and greater fatigue than fathers. This experience gap is attributed to the differing tasks of each parent.”
Many people feel as if parenting roles are becoming more equal but is that really the case? Think about the last time your child was sick or the last PTA meeting. Which parent was involved in those events?
“The good news from our study is that parents generally enjoy being with their kids,” said University of Minnesota researcher Ann Meier, “but the bad news is that mothers enjoy it less than fathers because they do more of the ‘work’ and less of the ‘fun’ parenting tasks.”
In a nutshell, they are saying that mothers are doing everything and it is annoying them.
Another factor that can affect the stress levels of parents is the amount of sleep they are getting. As it turns out, mothers are not getting as much sleep as fathers. This is something else that is obvious to many of us, but it took a major study to put it in print.
