It seems as if it was just yesterday that we were enjoying regular comedy from Robin Williams and now he is gone. Although quite some time has gone by since he passed away, the world is still mourning the loss and for good reason. In fact, I would be surprised if the world ever stopped morning over Robin Williams, because he had so much to offer to humanity.
When you really stop to think about what Robin Williams brought to the table, it makes you take pause and think about it. Not only was he energy personified, he could make you laugh about anything and he even had the ability to make us cry. Although you may consider that the death of Robin Williams is “old news,” taking some time to reflect on what he offered in life can really give you a newfound respect for the man.
1. He was voted least likely to succeed in high school
They kind of missed the mark on that one.
2. He improvise the opening scene of Aladdin
The filmmakers blindfolded Robin, put him at a table with random items on it and had him explain them as if he were a street merchant.
3. He was first to make Christopher Reeves laugh after his accident
When Robin Williams heard about the horse riding accident he visited Reeves, who was now paralyzed. He dressed up like a Russian doctor and performed a check up. Reeves laughed hysterically when he removed his mask.
4. He started out as a mime
I can’t imagine him NOT talking
5. Steven Spielberg called him while filming Schindler’s list
Putting him on speaker phone was the only way to cheer up the cast.
6. Richard Pryor and Jonathan Winters were his heroes
He even performed with them a number of times
7. He would prank call Billy Crystal
Crystal told everyone at Robin’s funeral about the time he received a call from who he thought was the late Ronald Reagan.
8. He loved being impersonated
His favourite was Dana Carvey
9. He helped Norm McDonald to get over stage fright
Norm was a young comedian and he had to open for Williams. When Robin walked by his dressing room, he burst in, pretending to be a Jewish Taylor. He stayed in character for 30 minutes!
10. An audience member once laughed so hard he got a hernia
Truth!
11. He sat on his head to get the role of Mork
When the producers asked him to have a seat, he sat on his head and was immediately offered the role
12. He had to be censored in 4 different languages on Mork and Mindy
He was given carte blanche for his role as Mork and he would often go off on tangents in other languages. In doing so, he would sneak in swear words and try to get them past the censors.
13. He used to dress like Mrs. Doubtfire even before the film
He was testing out the character to make sure he was believable.
14. Most of his free time was devoted to charity
He was a supporter of St. Jude children’s research Hospital and often entertained the children there.
15. He put Jessica Chastain through college
Robin never forgot where he came from and he put Jessica Chastain through college.
