A Farmer Has Terminal Cancer But The Community Comes Together To Help Reap The Last Harvest

When a diagnosis of terminal cancer is given, it can be difficult on the person with cancer and the entire family. That was something that Carl Bates experienced, and he was a farmer who had his crops planted for the season. When it came harvest time, he was afraid that all of the crops would be lost but then his family reached out in an amazing way.

Carl’s cousin, Dan, reached out for help and he got it in a large way from the community. It all started when he spoke to one of Carl’s neighbours and from there, it continued to spread. Before long, a small army of farmers showed up at Carl’s farm and they were ready to work.

More than 40 people, 10 combines and 16 semi trucks were there for the project. They offered anything they could give, regardless of whether it was manpower, machinery or fuel.

The harvest was documented in a Facebook post that has gone viral.

Carl was thrilled with the help he received from the community. It took just 10 hours for the volunteers to harvest all 450 acres. That work would’ve taken him nearly a week to complete.

As the volunteers were working, Carl was in the passenger seat of a pickup truck riding around to express his gratitude.

Food was donated by nearby businesses in a show of support as well.

His cousin, Dan, is thankful for the help that Carl received. The generosity still overwhelms him.

“I hadn’t slept well for quite some time, thinking about this, but then last night, it should’ve been a relief. I should have been able to sleep. But I was so pumped up, I couldn’t sleep. I’m kind of getting teary-eyed right now, thinking of it.”

Carl is happy that the story is about helping a fellow man rather than hearing a sad story that seems to be so popular today. He’s grateful for everyone who has helped him reap the harvest and humbled by all of the prayers and good thoughts the people have sent in his behalf.
