Mum Finishes Nursing School 25 Years Later But Loses It When He Walks Into Graduation

It can be difficult when your child is not nearby, regardless of their age. For many mothers, their sons are deployed overseas in the military and they may not be together for months or even years. The mothers certainly do miss their son, and it can make some of the more important times of life difficult to go through.

That was the case for Margaret “Penny” Pearson, who had been missing her son while he was deployed in Kuwait and Iraq for a year. It was especially difficult for her, because he was deployed during the time that she was going through one of the most important times in her life. It was a special ceremony and she really felt the weight of his absence during the time that it was taking place.

You see, Pearson was graduating from nursing school. She was going through a pinning ceremony and especially missing her son, because he had encouraged her to go back to school and earn her degree.

Pearson is also a mother of twin girls. When her children were young, she started nursing school to become an LPN. She had always dreamed, however, of returning and becoming an RN.

She continued to work full-time as an LPN and then pursued her dream. Her son was always there for her on the phone when she faced various challenges.

Although her son was to be back in the country when she was to go through her pinning ceremony, he told her that he had to stay on base to undergo medical treatment. Unfortunately, he wouldn’t be able to make it to the ceremony.

She thought about how her family would be there to celebrate her accomplishment. It was heartbreaking to her that her son would miss the ceremony.

Sgt. Pearson surprised his mother by entering the ceremony to pin her instead of his father. The school had made the changes in the ceremony so the surprise would work out well.

The mother’s emotional reaction is heartwarming and perfect. She was able to celebrate her accomplishment by graduating nursing school and to have her son there by her side when she did so.
