According to many studies, the bond that takes place between a newborn baby and their parents grow stronger with skin-to-skin contact. That is one of the reasons why you often see a doctor place the newborn on their mother’s chest immediately after the birth takes place.
This is not only important for the connection between the mother and child, the contact also helps to regulate body temperature in a natural way. In fact, incubators are unable to match its efficiency.
In some countries, such as Denmark and Sweden, the importance of skin-to-skin contact is so well-known that it is practiced, even when the baby is born prematurely.
Although many of us may think about this type of contact as being between the mother and a newborn baby, the entire family can benefit from this practice as well. In this photograph, we see the father and his son caring for the newborn twins in the family in such a way.
This photograph was shared last year on a Swedish Facebook page but it has recently been translated into English and shared on the NINO Birth’s Facebook page. Since it was posted, mothers from all over the world have commented on how beautiful the moment is.
“Spent two months with my son on my skin from morning until night. He was born 2 months too early. A beautiful experience!!!”
“Oh how I wish I could have been able to hold my son like this when he was born at 31 weeks at 2.5 lbs. I hated having to watch him in the incubator and desperately wanting to hold him. This makes so much more sense.”
