Facebook Warning of Government Hackers

We all enjoy using Facebook, regardless of whether it is for business purposes or to simply check in on some old friends. Unfortunately, there are plenty of dangers that also lurk in the background when you are using this social media giant. One of those dangers is the possibility of government monitoring, but that may be less of an issue because of the action that Facebook is taking.

Facebook has made the statement that warnings will be issued to users if an account is detected as being compromised. Those compromised accounts could come from state-sponsored or nation-state activities.

According to a statement by Facebook, they are now taking action when they believe that a security breach has taken place.

“While we have always taken steps to secure accounts that we believe to have been compromised, we decided to show this additional warning if we have a strong suspicion that an attack could be government-sponsored,” Facebook’s Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos wrote in a blog post on Saturday. “We do this because these types of attacks tend to be more advanced and dangerous than others, and we strongly encourage affected people to take the actions necessary to secure all of their online accounts”

How we you know when Facebook detects such an issue? You will see the following warning…

It is unlikely that Facebook will be able to provide additional details as to why they think the account had been targeted. It should be understood, although the individual account may be targeted, that doesn’t mean that Facebook itself has been compromised.

What should you do if you ever see such a notification from Facebook? The first thing that you should do is to enable two factor authentication. This can be found under the login section on Facebook. It is also prudent for you to check your computer system thoroughly, as it is likely to have been infected as well.

The previous transparency report from Facebook, which came out in November, 2014 showed that governments had been requesting information on user data and it was on the rise. In fact, in the year previous to the transparency report, such activity had gone up approximately 24%. Those requests, however, are formal requests and do not include government trying to get information without permission. It is unknown how often such an attack takes place, but the fact that Facebook is not doing something about it can give you an indication as to their frequency.
