There is no doubt that traveling by plane this the easiest and safest way to go. That doesn’t mean, however, that everybody wants to board a plane to travel to their destination. For those who want to get from London to Tokyo, it is about to get easier because it may just be possible to travel by train.
The final stop on the trans-Siberian route is Vladivostok. That is about to change, however, with a tunnel or bridge that would link Khabarovsk to the island of Sakhalin. It would use a 26 mile tunnel to land on the Japanese island of Hokkaido.
According to the Siberian times: “The ventures are seen as leading to a revival of not only commercial traffic between the two countries, but also to increased tourism and other human contacts”
The Kremlin is interested in developing Russia’s Far East which is lagging behind the country economically. Japan wants the extension because it could increase tourism.
There may be some issues that could derail this plan, and that is a argument over the Kuril Islands. Both of the nations claim the islands as their own, and a peace treaty was never signed when World War II ended.
