An allergic reaction can be a very frightening experience. In some instances, it can actually close off the airways and could even be deadly, if it is not properly addressed. This issue is even compounded further when the allergic reaction happens to a young child.
Sandy Knibbs was spending time with her family on a quiet afternoon and her daughter, Georgia, was eating an almond butter sandwich. Sandy said that Georgia had gone off to eat the sandwich and play but before long, she came back giving her the hurt sign. This sign is similar to shaking your hands as if you touched something hot.
Sandy had recently been taking a class with Georgia and both of them were learning sign language. Little did they know that this “Tiny Talk” class would save George’s life.
As Georgia was making the sign for hurt, Sandy could already see the blisters forming on her lips and on her hand where she was holding the sandwich. Sandy figured out that she was having an allergic reaction to the almonds in the almond butter.
Seeing an allergic reaction overtake your child is a frightening experience. Getting medical attention is imperative. But it can be quite difficult if you do not identify the allergy or if you don’t have access to the right medicine.
Sandy gave Georgia antihistamines and rushed her off to the doctors office. She was amazed that Georgia, although she could not yet speak, used sign language to alert her to a dangerous situation. Ultimately, it likely saved George’s life.
Georgia has started to talk, as she is now two years old. She still uses sign language, which Sandy says reduces problems with frustration and tantrums during the “terrible twos.”
