A Routine Landing At LaGuardia Turned Into A Night No One Will Forget

The wheels touched the pavement in the dark of a New York Sunday. It was supposed to be the end of a long day for the crew of Flight 8646. But the silence of the cabin did not last very long at all.

The Air Canada Express jet was carrying seventy-two souls from Montreal. Among them were two men who had spent their entire lives reaching for the sky. They were ready for a quiet night in the city.

Captain Antoine Forest was only twenty-nine years old. He was a man of the outdoors, a soul who climbed rocks and sailed through the wind. His journey to the cockpit was a long climb from bush planes.

But the dream turned into a nightmare.

He worked the bush runs and trained as an apprentice for years. He spent time flying for Air Saguenay and Exact Air before the big airlines called. He was a pilot who truly lived fully off the clock.

His life was a map of hiking and kayaking and sailing. He was in a relationship with Kahina Gagnon, a fellow pilot and an officer. They shared the same sky and the same dreams until that final night.

Sitting next to him was Mackenzie Gunther. He was a fresh face in the industry, a graduate from Seneca Polytechnic. He had just begun his professional career through a pathway program that year.

The flight had departed Montreal over two hours behind schedule. Trouble started before the wheels even touched the ground. There was a strange smell in the back of the cabin that made people ill.

Then the world shifted in a heartbeat.

Flight attendants were getting sick, and the pressure was building. The urgency comes through clearly in the recordings of the tower. 2384 is declaring an emergency, a voice said into the headset.

But the airport was a puzzle of moving parts and emergency trucks. The ramp did not have a gate ready for them. So the plane sat in a limbo of urgency and waiting while the ground crew scrambled.

The warning came too late.

The fire trucks were already moving to assist another aircraft. Then the jet collided with a heavy fire truck on the tarmac at LaGuardia. One passenger later remembered a massive jolt forward.

Then came the sound of metal screaming against metal. We felt a jolt and then a loud bang, a passenger wrote later. They felt the plane sliding sideways down the runway in a cloud of dust.

It was a hero’s final act.

But amid the chaos, there was a moment of grace. Someone did say the pilot tried to reverse thrust at the last second. It was a move that likely kept the plane from a much worse fate for all.

The impact killed both Forest and Gunther instantly. They were the only two who did not make it home that night. But their actions left dozens of others alive to tell the story of the crash.

The cockpit went dark forever.

Footage showed the emergency truck crushed against the nose of the jet. The plane was moving at about twenty four miles per hour when it happened. The aftermath was a storm of flashing lights.

Forty one people were rushed to hospitals in the middle of the night. Two police officers inside the truck were badly injured too. Now the flags at the flight school fly at half mast for the lost.

The audio from the tower captures the final seconds of the struggle. It shows a team trying to stop a truck that was already in the path. Truck one, stop, came the blunt warning over the radio.

No man, you did the best you could, the response lingers. But for the families of two young pilots, the best was a heavy price to pay. The runway is clear now, but the story of them remains.
