When you are driving along and suddenly, you see a police car with some activity going on, what is the first thing that you do? Most people would say that you should pull over a lane and slow down, and that is true. What most people do, however, is slow down so that they can get a better look at what is going on!
If anyone was doing that in Truckee, California, they got more than what they were expecting on this day.
The California highway police were called about an injured pelican and when they got there, they found he wasn’t injured. He was, however, flying between vehicles and dodging cars, posing a hazard to drivers.
Tony Griesemer, a member of the police who also has falconry experience was nearby.
The bird was tired so Tony knew he had to get a hold of him.
“This isn’t the first bird I’ve caught. I knew what to look for, how he was going to react and how he would try to defend himself.”
The pelican got a ride in the back of the cruiser before being transferred to a wildlife rescue group.
Hopefully he will stay out of trouble after this.
