When many of us look at the Olympics, we automatically see the competition but there is much more to the games that competing. There is also an element of sportsmanship involved, and some of the best moments of the games include times when there is compassion shown.
Although it certainly is true that the athletes are there to win the gold, they also recognize that there are times when they must look beyond wearing the medal around their neck. When we see it, it can really restore our faith in what humanity can do.
This took place when Abbey D’Agostino, an American athlete, and Nikki Hamblin of New Zealand took a tumble during the 5000 m qualifying race. It would end up ruining the race for both of them.
D’Agostino clipped the heels of her competitor and both of them fell to the ground. Instead of being angry over the situation, D’Agostino helps the other girl to her feet and it is being considered one of the most inspirational moments of the 2016 Olympics.
As it turns out, D’Agostino had injured herself but Hamblin continued to try to help her to finish the race. When it became apparent that they would not be able to catch the competition, Hamblin was told to continue without her.
They finished the race in last and second to last places but they shared a winning embrace!
American athlete Abbey D’Agostino and her competitor in the 5,000-meter race, Nikki Hamblin of New Zealand, took a nasty fall 3,000 meters into the run.
They both knew it was over for them and they wouldn’t be getting the gold.
Instead of being upset over the situation, D’Agostino helped her competitor to her feet.
They finished in the last two slots of the race but they shared an inspirational embrace in the end.
