What Happens When Little Girls Do Their Mothers’ Makeup Will Make You Rethink What ‘Beauty’ Means

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and a new photography series aims to show just how much our definition of the word changes over time.

Canadian artist Elly Heise has been hard at work with a series she calls #DAUGHTERDOESMYMAKEUP. She explains the goal of the project to Bored Panda:

I wanted to make a photographic series that communicates a fresh perspective on beauty by photographing mothers after their young daughters had done their makeup. I chose girls from a younger age range to come into the studio with their mothers and gave them total freedom to choose how they wanted to paint their mothers’ faces.

But the one thing that stood out to her as the project wore on was how differently the little girls saw “beauty” than their mothers—or most adults, really. While there seems to be a focus on being neat and tidy as we grow older, the little girls found the most joy in the messiest moments where they were allowed to do whatever they wanted.

Here’s how it looked as one little girl worked on her mom:

Here’s the final result of all the hard work:

The other photos in the series followed suit:

It’s a nice reminder that even when we want things to be perfect and flawless, beauty can still be a bit messy sometimes. And that’s okay.
