Johnny Cash is regarded as one of the greatest rock and roll performers of all time. It is also known that the only thing he loved more than his music was his wife, June Carter Cash.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the evidence of that love couldn’t be more timely with the emergence of a love letter Johnny wrote to June on her 65th birthday, in 1994:
“Happy Birthday Princess,
We got old and got used to each other. We think alike. We read each others minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted.
But once in awhile, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire. The #1 Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much.”
This loving letter has been voted the greatest love letter ever written, beating out ten others, according to the Daily Mail. Johnny Cash’s letter bested other love letters written by poets and writers like Ernest Hemingway and John Keats, as well as other historical figures like Winston Churchill and Napoleon Bonaparte.
