There are many reasons why you would want to visit Australia, but this is not one of them! Although the land is full of a variety of animals, many of which are cute and some that are interesting, very few of us would like to come across this particular critter.
Eric Holland found this giant Goanna lizard on the back of his house. Although it is not unusual to find lizards in many parts of the world, having a 5 foot lizard hanging on the back of your home is certainly going to be disconcerting!
Thankfully, Holland had the presence of mind to take a picture. If it had only been a story, it would likely be similar to the one that “got away.”

Holland had the following to say about his close encounter:
“Well it was a bloody big shock mate. I nearly trod on the bloody thing.”
This lizard is a mature Lace Monitor, and it is not unusual for these lizards to grow up to 6.5 feet long. On the higher-end, they may be up to 45 pounds!
The lace Monitor is fairly common in the area of Australia were Holland lives. Although that may be the case, it is the first one that he has seen after living there for more than 18 years.
We are certain that he is thankful that he saw the lizard before it saw him but all the same, I’m sure that he would rather not have him “hanging out” on the back of his house.
