007 Actor Daniel Craig Says He Can’t See the James Bond Role Being Played By a Woman

Over the years, British actor Daniel Craig has become a household name as he’s held the title of playing the world’s most dangerous secret agent, James Bond.

Since the filming of the earliest James Bond movies in the 1960s, the actors portraying agent “007” have all been men and have all gone on to achieve great heights of fame and success. Prior to Craig taking the role, Pierce Brosnan was James Bond. And the role has seen such actors as Sir Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, George Lazenby, Barry Nelson, and David Niven take on the agent 007 titles.

Like many of his fellow A-list celebrities, Craig, who’s always lived a very low-key lifestyle, doesn’t enjoy being in the spotlight once the cameras stop rolling. However, he has taken a few opportunities to talk about his love for his wife and family. Since 2011, Craig’s been married to actress Rachel Weisz, and the two share a daughter. The actor also has a daughter from his previous relationship with Fiona Loudon.

For a long time, both actors kept their relationship a secret, and while he still closely guards details about his private life, the actor has shared a bit of insight here and there during different interviews.

Recently, Craig talked about how he didn’t believe the role of James Bond should be played by a woman in the future. Since Craig filmed his last movie as the legendary secret agent, there have been a lot of discussions surrounding who will take up the role next, including conversations about a woman becoming the next agent 007. However, this is not something Craig believes should happen.

While talking to Radio Times, Craig suggested that women “deserve their own parts that are just as good.”  But, the actor added:

“There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color.” He went on to ask, “Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?”

However, not all former James Bond actors agree. In 2019, actor Pierce Brosnan threw his support behind the idea saying:

“I think we’ve watched the guys do it for the last 40 years,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there. I think it would be exhilarating, it would be exciting.”

Also, British Actress Lashana Lynch is set to take over Bond’s 007 agent number in the upcoming movie, leading to speculation that the next Bond could be a woman. Here’s a short clip of her in action.

During an interview with the Guardian, the actress said:

‘With Bond, it could be a man or woman. They could be white, black, Asian, mixed race. They could be young or old. At the end of the day, even if a two-year-old was playing Bond, everyone would flock to the cinema to see what this two-year-old’s gonna do, no?’

But, Croccoli made her views very clear on the subject:

“I always feel that Bond is a male character, that is just a fact. We have to make movies about women and women’s stories but we have to create female characters and not just for a gimmick turn a male character into a woman,” she said in 2019 during an interview on “Good Morning Britain” according to Harper’s Bazaar.
