Most young children who are approaching their teenage years are typically listening to the latest songs and not really given much thought to the lyrics. This one 11-year-old boy, however, is taking what he hears rather seriously. He wrote an open letter to Justin Bieber and asked him to realize the error he made in his song, Boyfriend, using the wrong verb tense.
The lyrics to the song read “If I was your boyfriend, I’d never let you go.” This young student from South Cornwall, however, points out that the grammatically correct way to use the sentence is “If I WERE your boyfriend, I’d never let you go.”
The student realized the mistake made by Bieber after studying for his Upper Key Stage 2 Pronunciation and Grammar exam. The lesson was on the use of subjunctive mood. He is asking artists who have influence over young children to pay closer attention to their lyrics and make sure they use the proper grammar.
The open letter even refers to another popstar, Beyoncé in her song “If I Were a Boy.”
“If current performers such as Beyoncé can write a song using the subjunctive mood correctly, so must you.”
Admittedly, there are some grammar mistakes in the letter itself and the Internet has been quick to point out those mistakes. Neither the young lad nor his teacher are upset about the critique, as they feel his letter will have a positive effect on other youngsters.
The Cornwall teacher is now hoping that the letter will go viral and they are doing what they can to ensure that it does. It is their hope that it eventually will reach Bieber and until it does, it will assist in raising awareness of using proper grammar.
