The year was 1985. Princess Diana was only 24 years old and her husband, the Prince of Wales, was 37.
It was in that year that these two individuals were guests at the White House for a gala dinner. The eyes of all the nation were on this special event.
Perhaps you will remember that Ronald Reagan, then president of the United States, introduced these two individuals but didn’t quite get the details correct:
“Permit me to add our congratulations to Prince Charles on his birthday just five days away and express also our great happiness that… er… Princess David – Princess Diane – here on her first trip to the United States.”

Diana danced with John Travolta, who was well-known for his role in Saturday Night Fever. They played a song from the soundtrack and the dance was loved by the public so much that the dress she wore became known as the “Travolta dress.”
It was an midnight blue evening dress designed by Victor Edelstein. She also wore the same dress when her last official portrait was taken in 1997. Only two months prior to her death, it was put in a charity auction, where it sold to a Florida businesswoman.
The dress was sold at auction again in 2013 for over $360,000. According to the auction house, a British gentleman purchased the dress to cheer up his wife.
I put my hand in the middle of her back, brought her hand down so that it wouldn’t be so high and gave her the confidence that we would do just fine. – John Travolta
I felt that I had taken her back to her childhood, when she had probably watched Grease – and for that moment I was her Prince Charming. – John Travolta
Prince Charles was repeatedly asked about the dance. His reply was “I am not a glove puppet.”
