Teenager Barred From School For Bad Behavior But The Mum’s Clever Punishment Is Creating Quite A Stir

Most of us have gotten in some type of trouble at school and the same may also be true of our children. When we think back to some of the times that we got in trouble, it may not seem so bad that our children find their way into detention from time to time.

One of the hardest parts about being in trouble was telling our parents that we got into that trouble in the first place. Donna Cooper, who is one of those people who did get in trouble from time to time, said that her son was “not one for school” but his conduct was inexcusable. Her son, Nick, was put onto a restricted timetable to limit how many days per week he could attend school. Donna realised that a stand needed to be taken and she came up with a rather brilliant plan.

She went on Facebook to explain what was going on with her 16-year-old son and that he was actually available to work, for free!

A café owner nearby got interested in what Donna was offering and contacted them. He said that they can start immediately, so she jumped at the chance.

“I walked in from work and told him he had a shift at a café the next day,” Donna recalls. “I was so angry with him I knew I had to find him something to do.”

Of course, Nick wasn’t very happy with what was going on but he ended up getting along with the owner. He got some shifts at the beach café and was offered a trial apprenticeship at a joinery firm.

Donna was quite happy about Nick’s efforts and she said: “He managed to organise an interview for himself while we were at work, and now he has a trial doing a job he has always wanted to do.”

“Some kids expect jobs to fall on their laps. Nick complained about the café work at first but he went on to do a brilliant job. He now has a great reference to be able to find other work,” Donna explains.

This wasn’t the only thing that came out of the Facebook post.

“This young lad picked me up and took me home,” a woman said. “I had had a horrific fall and if it hadn’t been for Nick I probably would have died so thank you. A lovely young man.”

You can see that it won’t be long before Nick has plenty of jobs to pick from. He may even decide that he is not quite ready for work and return back to school again.

Donna was able to teach her son the importance of the consequences that his actions would create. Perhaps it is inspiration for us as well.
