From time to time, many of us consider the potential final words we would say to others. Many of us would not even think about saying a harsh word to someone we love, just in case it was the last. For a mother in Florida, she never have imagined a text exchange from her 14-year-old son that got interrupted would be the last time that she interacted with him.
The final thing that Perry Cohen wrote was “I’ve been doing it but I was going to sleep at…” This was likely in reference to completing his homework. His iPad died, so his sentence was incomplete.
Perry had gone out with his friend Austin Stefanos fishing nine months ago but they never came home. Until recently, there was never any sign of the boys until a small vessel crew found their boat 100 miles off the coast of Bermuda. Inside of the boat were 2 fishing rods, 2 tackle boxes and Perry’s iPhone. There were no other clues that helped authorities.
Investigators are now hoping the cell phone can pinpoint their last location. They are working with Apple to repair the phone, because it has severe water damage after being at sea for nine months.
The families would like closure but it is difficult to lay their sons to rest without knowing if they are actually dead. If there are still a sliver of hope, it cannot be pushed aside.
Pamela, Perry’s mother, could never have guessed that the text exchange would be their last communication. They were fortunate to have some sentimental moments in the last exchange. He wrote:
Mom, it’s Perry. My iPad is dead… I’ll text you in a little. Love you.
She responded, “OK. I wanted you to sleep home tonight. I miss you”
It is clear that this mother and son had a strong relationship. We hope that they get the closure they seek.
