Val Kilmer, one of the most recognizable heartthrobs in the 80s and 90s, who starred in such hit movies as “Top Gun” where he played Tom “Iceman” Kazanksy, the fantasy classic “Willow,” one of the best westerns of all time “Tombstone,” where he played Doc Holiday, and he even portrayed the caped crusader in 1995 “Batman Forever.”
Not long ago, he talked about a terrifying moment during his battle with throat cancer.
The incident took place at his friend Cher’s home. Val wrote in his book “I’m Your Huckleberry: A Memoir” about the frightful scene that made him realize something was wrong with his body.
“One night I suddenly awoke vomiting blood that covered the bed like a scene out of The Godfather. I prayed immediately, then called 911. Then alerted my hostess. Cher stepped in and stepped up.”
After he was hospitalized in 2015, doctors discovered he had throat cancer, and the actor had to undergo multiple surgeries. Val battled the disease for two years before his cancer finally remission.
During an interview with Good Morning America in 2020, Val revealed that he’d been cancer-free for a couple of years. However, he also shared that he now has to use a feeding tube and can no longer eat food.
Since his big comeback in 2020, Val has stayed pretty busy promoting his memoir and, in 2021, was involved in a documentary about his life called “Val,” a project which saw him working with his two children, Jack and Mercedes Kilmer. Jack, age 26, was the narrator for his dad’s self-titled documentary.
While Val can still speak, his voice is a lot raspier since his cancer battle, so he asked his son to narrate the documentary, which follows the highs and lows of the actor’s personal life.
The movie was screened at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival before premiering on Amazon Prime in August of that same year.
In this segment from Good Morning America, Val opens up about his struggle with cancer.
