All of us could agree that our dental health is very important, so we try to use the right products when it comes to cleaning our teeth. Unfortunately, even the best products may sometimes cause problems, but those problems are often swept under the carpet.
This difficulty was discovered by a young lady when she went in for a standard root canal. Although none of us would look forward to a root canal, she can be thankful that she had one because it may have saved her a lot of additional problems!
It all took place during a routine irrigation after the root canal took place. The dentist asked Lallouz if she was using Crest Pro-Health toothpaste. She had been using it, but she was curious as to why he was asking.
It was then that the dental hygienist showed some tiny blue balls that had been pulled from under her gums as well as between her teeth.
They are known as micro-beads and in essence, they are plastic beads that are supposed to enhance how well the toothpaste cleans your teeth. They are found in Crest toothpaste and other products as well.
Although the beads may work well in theory, they don’t always work as good as they should in actuality. They don’t always get washed away with water and they may end up stuck in your teeth or gums. Even if they do end up going down the drain, they can cause additional problems.
When these beads make their way to open water, they are found by fish and ingested.
Since there are so many of these products that contain pieces of plastic, the effect on our health and health on sea life is staggering.
Although would be nice to have a list of all of the products that use these plastic beads, it is impossible to track. After all, the products are constantly changing and one company that may be using them today may not be using them tomorrow. The opposite may also be true.
These plastic beads may have been included in those products for good reason, but those reasons are now on shaky ground.
Fortunately, there is legislation in some states that may stop products from using them.
The following states now restrict the usage of microbeads. California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland and New Jersey.
