The Principal Finds A Dead Squirrel In A Student’s Backpack And It Escalates Quickly

When our child enters into school, we are starting a new era in life. It is one that is occasionally marked by a phone call from the school district, one that we dread receiving. When we see the number, we begin to wonder if they are sick or in trouble or if we will have to drop everything and go get them.

Typically, the moment comes and goes without too much fanfare. We may pick up the phone and find out that it’s an automated call about a school meeting but what happens when the principal is talking on the other end of the line? What if the principal was to tell you that your son just became his personal hero because he is now storing a dead squirrel in his backpack?

This was something that was experienced by a woman named Layde M Hobson. Fortunately, she posted it so we can all enjoy the exchange. It has gone viral.

Her Post Reads:

“When the principal calls to tell you that your son has made her day, so you get excited for the good news… Only to find out that the faculty has discovered a dead squirrel in his backpack (yeah, that 50 dollar Pottery Barn backpack).”

When asked by the principal what possessed him to pick up this dead squirrel and store it in his backpack, my son replies with ‘I really wanted squirrel dumplings for dinner tonight.’”

DEAD.

“The principal definitely has a good sense of humour and is a sweetheart. His teacher actually did not find any humour in the situation at all! My son is eight. Yes I know, I thought we were past this sort of foolery.”

“Then, she asks if I actually want the squirrel to come home with him. Y’all, I had to explain that we are from the country, but we’re not THAT country. (Sorry if any of you actually eat squirrel dumplings – I don’t mean that to be offensive).”

“She said ‘it looked so peaceful lying there in his bag,’ then sent me this picture…”

Hopefully this has provided a degree of perspective for all the parents out there. Suddenly, the things that they bring home seen quite tame in comparison.
