When you look at the picture below, it is likely to pull on your heartstrings. After all, on the surface, the photo is absolutely adorable but the truth of why it was taken is nothing short of heartbreaking.
This photo was posted to Facebook by the Fremont County Sheriff’s office. It was posted, not to be entertaining or to show off a precious baby but rather, a very important message was attached to it. When you find out the reason why this picture was posted, it may just change your mind about some decisions that could be made regularly.
The hat that is on the head of this baby girl is the one that used to be worn by her mother. The other items that also surround this eight month old little girl is the gear that was worn by her mother as well. This uniform, and this little baby girl belong to Jamie Jursevics, a Colorado state trooper who lost her life in the line of duty.
The police officers who worked with Jamie say that she was a good trooper and was “tenacious in the pursuit of justice and keeping others safe.” On the night when she was killed, she was trying to keep others safe while working the scene of a car accident. While directing a drunk driver to the side of the road using her flashlight, he accidentally hit and killed her because he was intoxicated.
Not only is this loss devastating to the police department, as Jamie was one of their top officers, she also leaves behind a husband and a young daughter.
Now Jamie’s family faces difficult days and years to follow, living a life without their beloved mother and wife. This photo of Jamie’s daughter was released by the Fremont County Sheriff’s office as a reminder to those who were planning on having a few drinks and then driving home. It asked a simple question, “Is it worth it?”
It is our hope, as well as theirs that this tragedy could result in something positive happening. If someone is drinking and thinking about getting behind the wheel, perhaps they will ask themselves, “is it worth it?” In doing so, they may just find an alternate way home and may save someone from dealing with the same tragedy as this family.
