Mother Shares Viral Photo of Fallen Deputy Helping Her Child

It can be difficult to get a child int a car seat but when Breanne, a mother from Kokomo, Indiana was having difficulties, she knew right where to go. She went to the county jail and was hoping that her daughter would get a lesson in safety from the officers there. A Howard County Sheriff’s deputy, Carles Koontz was the one who came to the car.

Officer Koontz did not hesitate to give assistance. He stood out in the cold talking to her about car seat safety for over 30 minutes. Not only was he kind, he was compassionate and giggled when the little girl got sassy. He talked about his own little boy as well. After snapping the photo, Breanne went home, glad that the officer was able to help.

It was only a few weeks later when tragedy struck. During the shootout when officer Koontz was serving a drug-related warrant with his partner, he was shot and killed. Officer Koontz was only 27 years old.

When Breanne learned of the death of this officer, she decided to share the photo on Facebook. It has now gone viral and it is a reminder to all of us about the men who serve as police officers to keep all of the safe.

In a rather unusual twist, an India mother realized that the fallen officer had been the one to help teach her daughter car seat safety. It happened just a few weeks before he was killed.

A few weeks ago Adalynne was giving me lots of trouble about staying in her car seat,” Brianne wrote on Facebook. “She had fought me for days before I decided enough was enough and one day I decided I was going to pull into the Howard County Jail so she could talk to an officer about car seat safety.

It just so happens the officer they sent out was Officer Kootnz.

When he came out he asked me what was going on and so I told him the situation and he just laughed and said, “Really?” I responded yep, she needs to learn her lesson.

Officer Kootnz stood out in the cold for at least 30 minutes talking to Adalynne about car seat safety. He couldn’t help but giggle every time she responded with her sassy remarks (she was not afraid that he was a cop whatsoever).

He then told us he has a little boy and asked if this is what he had to look forward to, I laughed and said oh you have no idea!

The news of his passing just breaks my heart,” Brianne writes. “He was one of the sweetest men and officer I have met and was so patient and kind to Adalynne. Sending prayers to his family, friends and fellow officers.

We are so thankful that this picture was captured, showing the compassion and kindness of this fallen officer.
