It doesn’t take much looking to learn that people get fired for a variety of reasons. In fact, it only takes a quick look at twitter and a search or two to discover some rather amusing reasons why people lost their job. For this woman, however, losing her job was anything but amusing.
Her name is Danielle Duperreault, and she posted information on Facebook about getting fired from Urban Planet. That company is a Canadian clothing store and she was fired after having a severe allergic reaction while working.
She began showing symptoms of anaphylaxis, which is a severe and potentially deadly allergic reaction. She asked for help, but her manager didn’t seem to show much concern.
She proceeded to show a tremendous amount of attitude, I did not have an epi pen on me at the time because mine was expired and I needed to get a prescription for a new one. So she told me to go look in my car then proceeded to of wander off, Meanwhile I’m getting fainty and I’m vomiting, I went out to my car and searched for one but no luck. So I go back into the store, gurgling and clutching my throat while customers and a few staff around me were freaking out and that same manager stood calmly at the computer typing away.
Fortunately, her coworker and friend saw that she was struggling and took her to a medical clinic. They didn’t have time to get to a hospital.
According to her Facebook post:
My throat had almost completely closed and I nearly passed out due to lack of oxygen…The doctors said if I would have waited another ten minutes I would be dead.
If it wasn’t enough to go through that ordeal, she got the following text message from her boss.
Her coworker friend, who saved her life, was also fired via text message! Apparently, saving your friend’s life is not as important as folding jeans.
Duperreault hopes that her experience will help to raise awareness about safety precautions and the possibility of allergic reactions in the workplace.
I firmly believe that there should always be an epi pen on hand in every store. Who knows if a customer needs one in an emergency, or someone who doesn’t know they have allergies and doesn’t own an epi pen. And frankly everyone I talked to about this believes that if she seen a customer in peril, she’d jump in to help. So please like and share this post to raise awareness about allergies in the workplace. There should be training on how to administer an epi pen, how to handle a situation like that, and how to deal with the after math.
Her post has now been shared more than 17,000 times. People are very upset over how Urban Planet could allow this to happen. She even had to tell people to stop sending threats to her former manager.
Here Is the Full Post:
