One of the most difficult times we will have in life is when we need to say goodbye to our dog. When they are no longer in our lives, it can leave a hole that is impossible to fill and many of us will mourn the loss for months, if not for years.
That was what happened when Officer Humphreys lost his beloved K-9 partner to cancer. Not only was the loss felt by him, it was felt by the entire department and the community as well. That is why this police officer saw fit to honour the loss in a special way.
He saved the life of another dog, which would have been killed if he had not stepped in to save him. You can learn more about this awesome act through the pictures below.
Elko was a K-9 officer with the Lawrenceville Police Department. He was a hard worker and a great friend.
“He was one of the truest forms of a real police officer,” explained his human partner Officer Humphreys.
The dog passed away at the young age of 8 after battling with cancer. The entire community felt the loss, especially Humphreys.
He also touched the life of Kristen Sarkar, founder of a local group that helps find homes for shelter animals.
She met the dog and his human family at a photo shoot and she decided to do something to honour his passing.
She was going to save the life of another dog with the help of the Humphreys.
She had recently met another German Shepherd like Eiko on death row. He had a badly injured leg, presumably from a snake bite, and was slated to be put down.
Sarkar wasn’t sure if they would take the dog, especially considering her injuries. On her way home, however, she decided to take the dog in honour of the fallen Eiko
The doggie was rescued and became a part of the Humphrey family. His name became EJ, short for Eiko Junior.
He loved his new family.
EJ even enjoys sitting at the same place that Eiko loved to sit. It has really helped them to overcome the loss.
