There are times when the most random event may turn into something that is absolutely phenomenal. That was the case with a picture was taken of an elderly man pushing a popsicle cart. You wouldn’t think much about it but the photo sparked an online campaign that has shown the goodwill of many people.
Joel Cervantes Macias saw a man struggling to push the cart full of popsicles. He took the picture of the man and then bought 20 popsicles for $50. After posting the photo to Facebook, it receives such a positive response that he knew he must take it further.
“That one picture had so much to say, and people really responded to it. It communicated so many things — poverty, struggle, pride — it’s like it spoke more words than any amount of writing could.”
He explained that the 89-year-old man and his wife had lost their only daughter. His wife had been selling popsicles to help make ends meet but she was unable to work when she got ill. That is when Macias and his friend started an online campaign but there were unprepared for the generosity that would pour out.
The goal set for the campaign was $3000 but to date, more than $200,000 has been given!
“The dude just looked like he was suffering. I thought, ‘This is a guy who ought to be enjoying retirement.'”
There was some concern over the possibility that the money would end up in the right hands. Macias posted a few additional messages reassuring the followers that he was real and that the money would go to help his family.
