This Strange Road In France Disappears Twice Daily Underwater

You really need to be careful when you are driving on certain roads in France. You might just drive on the road in one direction and then when you try to drive back, the road might not be there any longer. It isn’t because of the condition of the road, it is due to the tide. Passage du Gois is a road that connects the Gulf of Burnёf with the island of Noirmoutier.

When the tide rises, it covers the road and hides it under 13 ft of water!

The natural passage connecting the mainland to the island was first put on a map in 1701. It was used regularly starting in 1840. You can see the road in the pictures below:

The road may seem ordinary but it is actually quite dangerous. The road has panels on either side, letting you know if it is safe to pass.

Even so, many people get trapped on the road every year when the tide comes in. When that happens, the people can climb one of the elevated rescue towers along the way.
