School Uses Meditation Instead Of Detention And The Results Are Promising

Children may fear many things in life, but detention is probably at the lead of the list when they are younger. Not only do they have to worry about staying after school and the boredom of it all, they also need to be concerned about what their parents are going to say as well. As it turns out, detention may not be all that it is cracked up to be and at least one elementary school is proving it.

A test is being carried out in one school district in which elementary schools send their children to a “Mindful Moment Room” rather than a detention room. They are brightly coloured and are an oasis of calm where students can meditate in an afterschool program known as Holistic Me.

In this program, children do breathing exercises and are encouraged to speak to behavioral professionals. It works alone with a nonprofit group, The Holistic Life Foundation, and the results are very positive. Since initiating this program more than two years ago, not a single suspension has been issued.
