When Wendy Cruz-Chan was only 19 weeks pregnant, her son, Killian, was stillborn. It happened because of a rare uterus infection. Although she lost her child, her body continued to produce milk so she decided to do something in honour of her stillborn son.
Because she is a doula, she was able to find a number of babies who needed milk. She was interested in turning a tragic event into something positive. She knew she couldn’t personally breast-feed her own son, but she wanted to do something in his name.
Some people are surprised to see her pumping when they know her baby is no longer alive. By doing so, however, she is doing more than simply donating milk, she is helping to destigmatize the experience of child loss during pregnancy.
“I am working on a project of bringing awareness to stillbirths and miscarriages on my new Instagram page @mothersofstillbirths.”
It is her hope to provide a place where women can share stories and images.
She was able to donate approximately 60 L of breast milk over the course of three months.
“I realised through donating that it gave me a purpose to do something good to help me with the healing process,” Cruz-Chan said. “It just makes me feel good seeing all the babies I’ve been helping.”
Her journey was documented on social media.
