Many people are becoming increasingly aware of the environment around them. Although it certainly is necessary for us to use trees for wood, there are also many other things that make use of trees and require unnecessary deforestation. Many areas of the world are affected by this, including Bolivia, Paraguay, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brazil, Argentina and Papua New Guinea. The forests that were once thriving in those areas are now a matter of history.
If you are somebody that worries about deforestation, you are going to love the news out of Norway. The government is no longer going to buy products associated with tropical deforestation. In other words, the parliament is not going to give government contracts to any country that destroys forests.
Prior to this announcement, a number of countries decided to stop using goods that contributed to the destruction of the rain forest. Until now, however, no government has matched that effort.
Norway has become the first country to commit to a zero deforestation policy. Beginning now, any product that is obtained by the country will have to meet very stringent requirements.
Norway is also calling on other countries to do similar. After all, millions of people worldwide depend upon the forest because they are the “lungs of the earth”. It seems as if Norway is taking a huge step in the right direction.
