If you have any interest in classic American rock ‘n roll, you probably know about ZZ Top. The songs that they play are instantly recognizable, even though they have been around for decades. Speaking of decades, ZZ Top is now celebrating their 50th anniversary, an amazing feat for a rock band, to say the least. They first got together in 1969 in Houston, Texas and they had a rather unique look and sound that made them very popular.
Ever since 1969, vocalist/guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist/vocalist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard have been a part of ZZ Top. The debut album was released in 1971 and they may have changed to a certain extent over the years, but they continue to be an iconic band that is played regularly on the radio. Eliminator, which was their most popular album, came out in 1983. In 2004, they finally made their way into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall Of Fame.
They were recently interviewed about their 50th anniversary:

The video on this page shows the interview by CBS Sunday Morning and they talk about their history. They also were part of MTV when it was just a music channel.

They were asked about why they chose the name ZZ Top for their band and they say they don’t remember. In the past, they have discussed the possibility that it may have been initials of band names that were popular in 1969. They chose BB at first but decided to change because it was too similar to BB King.
