Australia has a lot to offer the world, and most people appreciate at least one thing from the “land down under”. For some, it is cooking shrimp on the grill, for others it is Crocodile Dundee. Most people, however, recognize the Australian accent as being unique and it is perhaps one of the more imitated accents worldwide.
New research has shown that the Australian accent may come from a rather unusual source. According to one expert (and yes, he is Australian), the accent came about because the settlers of the country spent most of their time drunk.
Dean Frenkel, who works at the Victoria University in Melbourne and is a communication expert had the following to say…
“Let’s get things straight about the origins of the Australian accent. The Australian alphabet cocktail was spiked by alcohol. Our forefathers regularly got drunk together and through their frequent interactions unknowingly added an alcoholic slur to our national speech patterns. For the past two centuries, from generation to generation, drunken Aussie-speak continues to be taught by sober parents to their children.”
He also said that it is no longer acceptable to be smarter than we sound. He continued with the following…
“The average Australian speaks to just two thirds capacity – with one third of our articulator muscles always sedentary as if lying on the couch; and that’s just concerning articulation. Missing consonants can include missing “t”s (Impordant), “l”s (Austraya) and “s”s (yesh), while many of our vowels are lazily transformed into other vowels, especially “a”s to “e”s (stending) and “i”s (New South Wyles) and “i”s to “oi”s (noight).”
Is it true? That has yet to be seen but there is no doubt that this “expert’s” opinion is going to ruffle some feathers…
