I have seen a lot of cute birds in my life but now that I’ve been introduced to the Tawny Frogmouth, they all pale in comparison. They are stocky birds with big heads and when you look at them, you will be struck with an irresistible urge to smother them with kisses!
Although this is an adorable bird for sure, they also serve a very useful purpose. Native to Australia, they take on a role of pest-control, eating hugs amounts of flies, mosquitoes and moths on the wing. They also eat vermin, beetles and worms!
1. Tawny Frogmouth’s are related to nightjars, a nocturnal bird.
2. They are able to capture loads of flying insects with their large, frog-like mouth.
3. They tend to nest in the crooks of trees and make their nests with feathers, moss, sticks, lichen and even spiderwebs.
4. As babies, they are covered with down.
5. The baby Frogmouth blends in well in the trees with it’s natural camouflage.
6. A Frogmouth will sleep sitting up in a position known as stumping.
7. A Frogmouth will make a noise similar to a bee when it is startled.
8. No fooling around for a Frogmouth, they are monogamous.
9. The lifespan of a Frogmouth may be as long as 10 years.
10. A Frogmouth will typically sit still for long periods of time, allowing the food to come to him.
Aren’t they cute?
