Ruby is a mare that was rescued from a horse auction in Pennsylvania. When she was rescued, she was so emaciated that nobody knew she was pregnant. It was her beautiful icy blue eyes, however, that caught the attention of her rescuer.
After being rescued, Ruby was brought to Thornberry Farm Stables and is now being slowly rehabilitated and living a much better life. Prior to the time she was rescued, however, she was severely abused and would barely let anybody come near her.
Time began to pass and they noticed that her belly was swelling. They called a local veterinarian, thinking that she had worms but she was actually pregnant. It was on April 29 that she gave birth to Skye, a lanky foal.
Everyone absolutely fell in love with Skye, except for the mother. From the day that he was born, she turned violent and would not allow him to nurse. It was necessary for action to be taken so that this baby horse would survive.
Nobody knew Ruby was pregnant when she arrived at Thornberry Farm Stables in Westchester, PA. As she started to gain weight, her belly started to swell and they realized a baby was on the way.
Skye, a baby foal, was born on April 29. Everybody immediately loved this little horse except the mother, who became violent because of her past problems with abuse.
Nobody really knows what Ruby went through before she was rescued at the auction. It is believed that she has a form of PTSD because of abuse.
It didn’t matter what they tried, Ruby would not allow the foal to nurse. Even after she was sedated, she continued to push the newborn horse away.
The temperature began dropping at the end of the day so Parker, the manager of the farm, and her boyfriend took the foal to their home and put him on a mattress on the floor.
The foal cuddled up with the humans all night long and every hour, he would give them a nudge so he could feed from a bottle.
They kept the foal on a tight feeding schedule but he wasn’t getting the nutrients that he needed. They realized that Skye needed a mother to care for him.
A retired racehorse named Lucy came to the rescue. She had been a surrogate mother before for another foal that was rejected by his mother.
They bonded almost immediately. Parker had the following to say:
“By Monday morning, they were in love. She’s lying next to him, standing over him while he sleeps. They’re running around together, connected at the hip.”
Thanks to the love of humans and his new surrogate mother, Skye is growing up to be a strong, beautiful horse.
