It isn’t often that you see an animal as adorable as a meerkat. When you see these baby meerkat pups, however, you will be on absolute cuteness overload!
The meerkat pups shown in this post were born on January 7 at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo. These are the first babies of their parents, Nairobi and Maputo. Meerkat pups have not been born at the zoo in 7 years, so it is a special occasion for numerous reasons!
“They were initially a little wary of this big new world outside, but with a bit of encouragement from mum and dad they started to explore.” – Zookeeper Courtney Mahony
The pumps have not yet been named because they do not know the sex and they are quite tiny, weighing in at a little over 120 g each. The sex of the pups will be determined during veterinary examinations that take place later in February. It is suspected that there is one male and one female, as is seen in their personalities. The one that is suspected to be a male is more adventurous and inquisitive. The female tends to stay closer to her mother and is quiet.
Throughout the day, the pups will wander for short distances as they get accustomed to the world around them. Of course, the zookeepers and their parents are keeping a keen eye on them. Aren’t these pups just the cutest thing you have ever seen!?
