Dog Hospice Gives Dogs Dignity in Last Days

Many of us are familiar with a program known as Hospice. It helps older individuals and those that are terminally sick during and close to the end of their life. It has helped many families through difficult times on both a physical and emotional level. Now, it appears, there is a similar program for dogs.

The program is named Fospice, and it’s mission is to give comfort and care to elderly and terminally ill shelter dogs in the last stages of their lives. The company, Foster Dogs NYC, was founded by Sarah Brasky. She was inspired by a similar program, which is operated by the ASPCA.

Brasky explains…

“Too many old and sick dogs die in shelters. Sometimes shelters receive animals that are not medically healthy enough for adoption, but they still have the right to live out their golden years in loving homes and with proper medical treatment. While I would not want any animal to be stuck in a shelter, it can be particularly difficult for seniors who miss their lifelong families, and need quiet and comfort during their final years/months.”

When a dog is placed under the care of Foster Dogs NYC, they make every effort possible to find homes for these deserving dogs. They provide supplies, visits to the vet and offer gifts for the pet.

The experience of Chelsea Massimin is typical of what may be experienced with this program. The became a Fospice mother to a 13-year-old black Chihuahua named lucy. Lucy has been battling with kidney problems and cancer, not to mention living in hoarding situations and various shelters.

Massimin was saddened when she learned that Lucy was going to die in the pound. She is planning on catering to every whim of this precious dog until the final moments, providing cooked food, cuddles and love.

Although Fospice is only able to sponsor 5 dogs per year, they have recently received a non-profit status. This new status will soon permit them to provide additional donations to improve the quality of life for more dogs.
