There are many people out there who love horses. From the time some of them are very young, they dream about the possibility of having their own horse. For far too many of those people, however, the dream never really comes to life but for some, it is a lifelong pursuit. That was the case for Kimberly Lewis, but she didn’t have the horse in her youth, it was after she grew up. By that time in her life, she was ready to give the horse everything they needed.
Her husband said he would buy her a horse. The only thing she had to do was to pick it from among all of those that were available. It as tough, because she went to see a lot of horses but never really felt a connection with them.
That is when she saw a horse in a field at an animal shelter. She may not have been the majestic horse that she dreamed about when she was young, but there was something about it. Although it was is a bad state and needing a lot of attention, she decided to do something wonderful.
Kimberly decided she would give this horse a second chance to run free and enjoy life. Read on to learn more about the transformation.
Kimberly Lewis had a difficult time connecting with any horses she met, until she met this horse by chance.
The horse was at a shelter for battered horses after she was neglected and abused by a former owner.
The horse weighed only 812 pounds, which is only half of what she should weigh. Her hair was matted and dirty and her hooves needed attention.
The worst part was her eyes. They looked empty, as if she had lost the will to live.
Lewis knew she had found her horse.
She knew that the horse may never be able to be ridden, since she had undergone such abuse. It was even possible that the horse would not recover.
“All I knew was she deserves a chance to be a horse,” she says.
She gave the $50 and took the horse home. She named her horse Dolly, as up until that time, the horse didn’t have a name.
A year later? You would not even recognize Dolly. She is not a healthy 1,400 pounds and is thought to be about 5 years old.
She not only recovered from the physical wounds, she recovered emotionally as well.
“The biggest change is her eyes and her personality,” Lewis says.
Dolly is a silly girl too
As for Lewis, she says, “As corny as it sounds, we rescued each other. I am constantly learning from her, becoming a better person because of her.”
