We don’t often see owls in the wild. They tend to be active at night and when they fly, they make no sound. When we do see them, it is difficult not to fall in love with their beauty. After all, it is easy to get lost in their eyes that seem to stare off into eternity.
I would like to introduce you to Zeus, a Western screech owl with the most hauntingly beautiful eyes you will ever see. When you look into them, it looks like stars and galaxies twinkling before you. It truly is a sight to behold.
The stars that you see in his eyes are there because of blood pigment and clots of protein. He also has cataracts, which enhances the effect. They aren’t sure why he has these problems but it is thought to be from a predator attack or perhaps an accident while flying.
Zeus only has about 10% of his vision, so he stays safe and sound with the kind people at the Wildlife Learning Center is California. Because of his eyesight, he is not safe in the wild.
