People around the world marvel at animals and all they are able to do. It seems that they are not only able to act like humans but in some cases, they are also able to adapt to their circumstances. Perhaps you have seen experiments where apes are put in a room with bananas hanging from the ceiling and a bunch of boxes scattered about. Before long, the ape will use the boxes to build a staircase to the banana and get his prize. It’s amazing to see it happen but it isn’t exactly Planet of the Apes. I mean, we don’t need to worry about apes taking over anytime soon, or do we?
The Zhengzhou Zoo in Centra China is home to a cute little monkey. Like monkeys at zoos around the world, he is a big attraction that seems to bring people back again and again to visit. When people were visiting the zoo recently, however, they were given more than a typical meet and greet, where they look at the cute little monkey playing in his pen. In fact, they saw something that was rather alarming. The monkey used a stone to break the glass wall of its enclosure. It seems as if those visitors weren’t the only ones who were surprised, the monkey was shocked as well.
According to Mr. Wang, a tourist: “the monkey was sharpening the stone, then it started hitting it on the glass. The monkey scared itself away, but it came back to take another look and even touched it.” Was this just a random accident or perhaps an opportunity to escape?
Tian Shuliao is a zoo staff member had the following to say: “this monkey is unlike other monkeys. This one knows how to use tools to break walnuts. When we feed walnuts to other monkeys, they only know to bite it. But it had never hit the glass before though. This is the first time. It’s toughened glass, so it would never have got out. After it happened, we picked up all the rocks and took away all its ‘weapons’.”
It may sound surprising but there are actually a number of different animals that know how to use tools and they aren’t all monkeys. For example, crows will use different tools, including twigs and their own feathers.
Some animals that live in the sea are also resourceful. Sea otters use rocks to crack open abalone shells and octopi use coconut shells as a type of armor.
