This baby monkey is named Nangua, which just so happens to be the Mandarin word for pumpkin. He is aptly named, because he is the shade of a pumpkin! He was born at the Sydney Taronga Zoo and is a male Francois’ langur, a monkey that is considered to be one of the rarest in the world!

His mother was found to be holding him on November 7. Her name is Meili, and along with the other female monkeys in the cage, they are giving him plenty of attention! We tend to wonder how you could avoid giving such an adorable little guy your best!

This type of animal is also referred to as a Francois Leaf Monkey. When they are born, they may sometimes have brown or white hair but as is the case with this little guy, their hair can also be bright orange! As they get older, their hair continues to change color and by the time they are one year old, it is typically black. It is not fully known why the hair of the baby is orange, but it may help to identify them as infants.

Have you ever heard the expression, it takes an entire village to raise a child? These monkeys live by that principle, so in many cases, the other females will also help to raise the young monkeys.

Worldwide, there are approximately 2000 of this species of monkey still alive. Concentrated areas of population include Southwest China and northern Vietnam. They were once widespread in those areas but now, they have become rare because of poaching for traditional medicines and habitat loss.
