A few years ago in Israel, a most unusual thing took place. It happened when an eagle flew into a vulture enclosuree at the Gamla Nature Reserve. He was spotted by a man, and it was certainly an unusual sight to see such a rare and majestic Eagle sitting among the vultures.
There have always been stories about people with unusual strength that happen when the situation calls for it. For example, we have all heard the story about a mother who was able to lift a car off of her baby. I don’t know if those stories are true or not, but there is something that helped this eagle to get where he was now.
Steppe Eagles live in portions of Asia and Africa and they are on the endangered species list. In the winter, they migrate south into Africa and then fly back to Asia when the warmer weather hits. Workers were a little confused as to how one of these rare Eagles could have ended up in a vulture habitat in Israel. They then took the bird to a hospital to see what was going on.
They noticed something out of place in the vulture habitat at Israel’s Gamla Nature Reserve.
They found this rare Eagle in the habitat where they put out a calf carcass for food.
Somehow, the eagle was able to work his way into the enclosure.
After inspecting the eagle, they realized he was in poor condition. It seemed as if something was wrong with his shoulder but they didn’t know what it was.
They bandaged the wounds and then had a consultation with an avian ecologist. The eagle was taken to an animal hospital where they took an x-ray and made a startling discovery.
There was an arrow lodged in the birds left leg, piercing into the abdomen.
They then realized that the bird must have come to Israel from Africa. These birds are regularly targeted by poachers in Africa. The injury was quite severe but the bird still was able to make the long flight.
They removed the piece of arrow, it was 5 inches long.
This may seem like an odd story but injured birds migrating from Africa to Israel happens more often than you might realize.
They were well-equipped to deal with the problem. The eagle was able to regain his health in no time at all.
Just two hours after surgery, the eagle was able to stand and eat on his own.
He may not fly for a while but he is going to live.
