Many of us live in an area where we might come face to face with wild animals at times. Sometimes, it is a rather innocent animal, such as a raccoon or perhaps a possum. In other cases, there might be the occasional deer or perhaps even a bear that might come wandering across our path. It is true that we need to be cautions but they are often just as afraid of us as we are of them.
For Gwen Maxwell, an 86 year old woman, it was something most unusual that she saw. When she was leaving her home, she saw what looked like a puppy crossing the street. He didn’t seem to be doing well, so she moved in for a closer look. When she got close enough, she was shocked to see he was covered in cacti.
As it turns out, it wasn’t a dog but it was a young coyote pup
He was having such a problem because there were 7 clumps of chola cacti stuck to his face, shoulders and legs
Gwen went to get help when the pup collapsed. “He’d get up and tumble around with all those chollas on him, and it was just so heartbreaking,” she said.
The mother coyote was watching what was happening. “She kept coming back and holding a vigil in my backyard.”
2 men from a nearby golf course finally arrived and began planning how to help the pup
They used a set of pliers and a pair of heavy gloves to start removing the chunks of cacti
The pup was quite calm while the ordeal was going on. When he was finally free, he was so adorable!
Even though he was a little beat up from the ordeal
He was going to be just fine
They took a few quick pictures and then put the pup down. He went straight over to his mom and they disappeared together into the brush.
