Ethiopians Join Together To Plant Over 350 Million Trees In One Day

It’s always interesting when a world record is broken. People will spend years getting ready for such an event and they may even have to try multiple times before they finally are able to achieve that goal. It is often an individual who sets such a record but for Ethiopians, it took a joint effort of many people in order to break a world record. That record was broken when Ethiopians planted more than 200 million trees in a single day. In fact, the estimates have even climbed since the initial report to be more than 350 million trees in that one day!

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was responsible for starting the initiative that pushed planting trees. Climate change and deforestation in Ethiopia has really taken a toll and it is not only an issue for Ethiopians, it is something that also has the ability to affect the world. It was quite an achievement, and according to a state broadcasting network, 224 million trees were planted. The more updated number of 353 million trees was reported by CBS at a later time.

“Today Ethiopia is set in our attempt to break the world record together for a green legacy,” Ahmed’s office tweeted

Most of us recognize the benefits of setting goals and it seems as if Ethiopia is only just beginning. Although they planted hundreds of millions of trees in a single day, they are trying to plant 4 billion trees by October of this year. The government is saying that they have almost planted 3 billion trees across the entire country toward that goal.

The decline in forests that have been seen in the country of Ethiopia is startling. These efforts that were started by individual citizens and the government are helping to make a difference. Approximately 30% of Ethiopia was covered in trees in the early 1900s. That number is now at 4% so they are hoping that the push to plant trees will make a change.
