A Totally Handmade Crocheted Wedding Dress

Crocheting is something that many of our grandmothers used to do and they may have made some rather interesting, yet small items. Included among those items were doilies or cozies but as you will soon see, crocheting can be used for larger items as well!

It all started when Abby Ramirez-Bodley, from Tulsa Oklahoma wanted something unique and vintage for her wedding. Rather than spending thousands of dollars on an antique wedding dress, she spent $70 and created something epic!

Abby was only 22 years old when she decided to put her crochet skills to good use. She had learned how to crochet at the age of three, as her aunt was kind enough to teach her so she enlisted the help of her aunt to create something stunning.

Although it certainly is true that the gown is beyond beautiful, the process was not simple. Since they didn’t work from a pattern, they had to do a lot of guessing when it came to the creation process and everything was hand sewn. Before they met to begin with the dress, they each made a crocheted doily and then they pieced them together, starting the skirt and moving up.

A see-through fabric was used to provide more of a base for the dress. Although there were many difficulties along the way, both women agree that the sleeves were the most difficult part.

The bride admits that the homemade gown made an impression, as the guests were quite impressed with the intricacies and detail of the design. Abby’s husband, Jake, knew that she was working on the dress but like many people, had some doubts as to whether something could be created for the wedding.

When all was said and done, she was amazed with what was accomplished. I have to admit, we are quite amazed as well!
