There are many movies that may come to mind when we think of what would be considered a classic, but Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory would certainly be included in the list. Although it has been some years since it hit the silver screen and the special effects are a bit dated, it still is an amazing film that fills most of us with nostalgia.
Of course, there are certain features about the movie that many of us wish we could have taken part in. For example, what child wouldn’t have wanted to take a swim in the chocolate river?
It’s difficult to believe that 45 years have passed since the movie was first put out. Now that Gene Wilder has passed away, there are many secrets being revealed about the movie, some of which you may never have known before.
1. Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory was based on Roald Dahl’s book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
2. It seems as if Roald was so unhappy with how the movie portrayed his book that he would not give up the rights to Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator
It is also reported that he never watched the entire film because he hated it so much. Other sources say that he attended the premier and was always happy while on set.
3. Gene Wilder would only agree to play Willy Wonka if he could do the scene where he walks out of the factory using the cane. When the cane gets stuck, he falls forward and does a somersault.
He wanted to do it because from that point forward, nobody would know if he was being truthful.
4. The Oompa Loompas would get drunk and pull pranks on the rest of the cast.
5. The children in the movie earned $500 a week for nine weeks of filming. They still occasionally receive residual checks when the movie airs on TV.
6. For the most part, the candy onset was just a prop. The only time the candy was real was when children were shown eating it.
7. The chocolate river was made of 150,000 gallons of water, some real chocolate and cream. By the time the filming ended, the cream was spoiling and the smell was unbearable.
8. In the scene with the “Wonka Wash,” the foam was the same as what you would find in a fire extinguisher. They didn’t realise that it was a skin irritant until it was used, so many of the people on set had to receive medical treatment.
9. The girl who played Veruca Salt, Julie Dawn Cole, dropped herself on a rock that she thought was fake. Her leg started to bleed. If you look closely at her knee, you can see the stocking is covered with blood.
10. Julie took home a golden ticket, a Willy Wonka candy wrapper and an everlasting gobstopper after the movie wrapped, even though she was told not to.
11. Most of the Wonka bars were made out of wood
12. Peter Ostrum, who played Charlie, was going through puberty while filming. That is why his voice is much higher at the beginning of the movie than it is at the end.
13. After the Willy Wonka movie, Peter never appeared in another film. He even turned down some big roles, saying she didn’t want acting to be his profession. He went on to become a veterinarian.
14. The Quaker Oats company originally held the copyright to the film. They were releasing a line of sweet cereals and thought it would be a good way to promote it.
15. When the movie was originally released at the box office, it was considered to be a flop because it only made $4 million. Michael Boller, who played Augustus Gloop didn’t realise he was famous until years later.
