Fiji Wins Its First Gold Medal EVER And The Country Loses It

The Olympics are beginning to heat up and this time, it is Fiji who is in the spotlight. They made history when their rugby team defeated Great Britain and they were able to claim their first gold medal of all time. Twitter has absolutely gone crazy as the countrymen and women in Fiji are celebrating in an awesome way.

The Fiji men’s rugby 7s team defeated their opponents with a 43-7 victory.

Right up until the last moment of the match, the people in Fiji were hoping for the best. One local bank even closed for 30 minutes during play!

When the final whistle blew, the entire nation lost control. People were literally dancing in the streets, hanging flags and celebrating as any country would after they won their very first gold medal.

Fiji entered the Olympics in the Melbourne games of 1956. Up until this time, however, they have not claimed a gold. This is the first year that rugby, a popular sport in Fiji, has been included in the Olympics since the 1924 games.

There is a moral to this story. If at first you don’t succeed, try again for 60 more years!
