Recently, a user on Imgur (mollywho) got married. She is also an individual that suffers from depression and has been through a rough stretch lately. Work has been tiring, her circle of friends seems to be shrinking and now she is in a brand-new marriage and learning how to deal with it day by day.
This post by Molly is going viral, and when you see why, you are sure to share it as well. It seems that on this particular day, Molly took out her frustrations on her husband. Perhaps she says it best:
“…amidst all the struggle, my husband has relentlessly tried to cheer me up. I’ve not been the easiest person to deal with. In fact, sometimes I’ve lost all hope and even taken my anger out on my new husband.”
It isn’t her words that are causing it to go viral, it is his actions!
Molly had come home from a trip to San Francisco and fell across the bed. She was feeling horribly about the way she talked to her husband that day, but then she looked up in the mirror and saw something staring back at her.
While Molly was out of town, her husband had left her a message on the glass. He had something that he wanted her to know in no uncertain terms.
“I’ve been juggling a LOT lately. Just got married. Couldn’t afford a wedding. Family is sparse. Falling out with friends, yaddadyadda. But, the thing is, amidst all the struggle, my husband has relentlessly tried to cheer me up. I’ve not been the easiest person to deal with. In fact, sometimes I’ve lost all hope and even taken my anger out on my new husband. But he somehow forgives me every time. I have a long journey ahead of me, and I know he probably realizes I’m mentally ill. But he holds my hand, and he tries his best.
Today when I came home from a trip to SF, I flopped onto my bed in tears. I looked to my left, and saw these words painted all across my mirror. I think he wanted me to remember how much he loves me. Because he knows how quickly I forget. He knows I struggle to see good in the world, and especially the good in myself. But here it is. A testament and gesture of his love. Damn, I needed it today…”
You read it right, her husband took a permanent marker and scribbled a list on the closet mirror. It was entitled “Reasons I love my wife.” There were 15 items on the list, including some that were emotional, some that were funny and others that were simply honest.
Just a few of the items on the list included “She’s the kindest person I know,” “She makes me laugh every day,” and “She has experienced severe tragedy yet is the most optimistic person about humanity that I know.”
When you see her expression in the mirror, it truly tells a tale. Not only is she stunned at what she is reading, she is moved to tears.
Support is a very important part of dealing with depression successfully. It seems clear that her husband is able to provide that support in great measure.
“Instead of stigmatizing the illness (or the person!) reach out. Don’t ostracize them. I made this post to show the world that even the little gestures like a small list of “<3′s” on my bedroom mirror can offer a little reminder of the love and kindness there is in the world.”
This is truly a powerful testimony to the feelings that Molly’s husband has for her. It is appropriate that he wrote the note in permanent marker, because it seems as if he is there to stay.
